Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swamy

The tale of the birth of Vishnumaya Chathan began with Lord Shiva and his companions hunting in a forest known as Koolikkunnu. While resting there, Lord Shiva spotted a young girl named Koolivaka, who was bathing in the river. He was immediately captivated by her beauty and expressed his desire to have her. Koolivaka, a devotee of Goddess Parvathy, recognized Lord Shiva and told him that she could not be touched as she was menstruating but promised to fulfil his desire after seven days.

Koolivaka prayed to Goddess Parvathy about the situation, and she promised to help. Parvathy appeared before Lord Shiva in disguise, and they had sexual relations. After receiving Lord Shiva's sperm, Parvathy deposited an ovule in two cubers (Kizhangu) - one at the river bank, and she gave the other to Koolivaka, instructing her to eat it. Parvathy blessed Koolivaka, saying that she would give birth to a child with the strength and capabilities of Lord Shiva and Parvathy. The cuber at the river bank gave birth to 390 Chathan children.

Koolivaka ate the cuber (kizhangu), became pregnant and gave birth to a son named Chathan, who became known as Kuttichathan due to his small and ever-young appearance. At the age of seven, he visited Kailasa to meet his father, Lord Shiva but was stopped by the gatekeeper, Nandhi. Chathan, determined to meet his father, transformed into the form of Mahavishnu and entered Kailasa. Even though Lord Shiva was initially resistant, Goddess Parvathy intervened and explained the situation to him, and he was pleased with the revelations.

Lord Shiva named his son Vishnumaya because he took Mahavishnu's form using his maya Sakthi. He adorned him with a yellow twine and blessed him with the power to protect the weak. He also gifted him with a strong buffalo to travel and ordered his aides and troops to obey Vishnumaya's orders. Goddess Parvathy presented Vishnumaya with two short sticks as his most powerful weapon to fight against injustice and protect devotees from their problems. Around 400 years ago, while the ancestors of the Karuvannur Karanayil Devasthanam were bathing in the river, Lord Shiva appeared before them. The Karanavar were renowned for their devotion to Lord Shiva. He requested them to keep his son, Lord Sree Vishnumaya, at their home and serve him with secret mantras. The karanavar welcomed Lord Sree Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swamy into their home wholeheartedly, and he resided with them ever since. Devotees from all over the world come to Karanayil Devasthanam to pray and offer special poojas to Lord Sree Vishnumaya Kuttichathan Swamy to overcome their problems and fulfil their needs.
